I have over 10 years’ experience in the behavioral health field, working with people from diverse backgrounds and age groups, and in varying capacities, from a family counselor in homes, to a coordinator of a non-profit drug court and my own private practice.
I received a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Southern Methodist University and a Master’s Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, from the California Institute of Professional Psychology. Throughout my education and post masters I needed to obtain 3000 hours of supervised practice experience, with 750 hours of direct work with couples/families and 1500 hours with individuals. To gather the necessary experience it will take between 2-3 years of full time work as an intern. My education and training focused heavily on the dynamics of relationships and marriage so I would be prepared to effectively work as a relationship consultant.
I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the state of Texas and Hawaii. I also am a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor in the state of Texas. Marriage and Family Therapists are the only type of counselor required to have relationship hours to become licensed. I have found having this base of education and training integral to my understanding of the complexity of relationship counseling.
My focus and passion is working with individuals and couples with relationship goals and concerns. Since delving in to this niche area I have found it important to continue my training and education to bring innovative methods of therapy to my clients. Please review in the section of my website-services-the various types of therapy I offer. Based on research and my experience I have found the following types of therapy highly effective. EMDR (Eye movement- desensitization and reprocessing), mindfulness, Emotionally Focused Couples therapy), Gottman Method and others. At times it is beneficial for some clients to combine different types of therapy to reach the goals set and the results desired.
